Alfonso Augustine
Vega
November 22, 1947 — February 27, 2026
Columbus
Alfonso Augustine Vega, 78, of Columbus, IN, passed away on February 27, 2026 at Compass Park - Indiana Masonic Home surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with cancer. In spite of his diagnosis, he faced his battle with strength and bravery and was embraced with love and support from his family here and across the country.
Al was the youngest of six children born to Eulalia Martinez Vega and Salvador Vega Sr. on November 22, 1947. Al, who was also lovingly known as Punkie, lived a life defined by love for his family and animals and embodied a joyful, caring and generous spirit that left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him. A long-time resident of Columbus, he dedicated his career to serving Bartholomew County in a variety of sectors. Prior to his diagnosis, he offered his time working at Silver Oaks Health Campus and enjoyed talking and building connections with the residents and staff there.
Al's generosity was a quality that was deeply admired by those who were close to him. He supported many organizations that helped others in need, especially those that advocated for animals - both big and small. With his love for animals, his beloved, Pretty Boy, held that special spot in his heart. Pretty Boy, who was originally found as a stray cat, quickly found his person with Al and the two were inseparable companions.
Those welcoming him into heaven are his parents, Eulalia Martinez Vega and Salvador Vega Sr., brothers John Vega, Ralph Vega and Salvador Vega, sisters Sally Garcia and Gloria Hernandez, friend and brother-in-law, Armando Hernandez - and Pretty Boy, who has been anxiously waiting for long overdue pets and cuddles.
He is survived by his longtime companion of 26 years, Elizabeth James, and her son, Jacob, whom he loved as his own. His memory will also be cherished and remembered by his family across Indiana, Illinois and Kansas.
Lastly, Al had a love for the Emerald Isle and St. Patrick's Day, which was his favorite holiday of the year. In celebrating his life, we ask that you keep Al in your heart and give an extra cheers to him on March 17th. ☘️
