Charles Burton Dougherty, 86, of Shelbyville, IN passed away Friday, May 6, 2022 at his residence surrounded by his loving family at his home near Bengal in Shelby County. He was born December 24, 1935 near Greenwood, IN to John E. Dougherty and Josephine (Wright) Dougherty. On November 12, 1960 he married Mary Donna (Lawson) Dougherty at Rocklane Christian Church in Greenwood, IN, she survives and were blessed with 61 years of marriage.
He was a 1954 graduate of Whiteland High School where he played on the basketball, baseball and track teams. After enlisting in the United States Army, he was sent to Berlin, Germany where he was a guard at Spandau Prison guarding Rudolph Hess. While in Germany, he ran on the U.S. Army track team in various German cities include Nuremberg. After returning from Germany, he started farming until retiring in 2014.
Charles was a member of Rocklane Christian Church and Bengal Christian Church.
His enjoyment in life was spending time with his family and farming.
Survivors include his wife Mary Donna (Lawson) Dougherty of Shelbyville, IN, a son Robert Dale Dougherty (Nancy) of Shelbyville, IN, grandsons Andrew Dougherty (Kate) of Columbus, IN and Matthew Dougherty (Alexa) of Mascotte, FL, great grandchildren Eli, Luke and Emery Dougherty, brothers Phillip Dougherty (Loretta) of Greenwood, IN, Don Dougherty (Jean) of Hamilton, OH, Jim Dougherty of Gwynville, IN, Bill Dougherty of Whiteland, IN and Steve Dougherty (Elaine) of Greenwood, IN, sisters Donna Laker (Tony) of Greenwood, IN and Mary Ellen Smith (Bob) of Greenwood, IN and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter Sheryl Lynn Dougherty, a son Charles Richard Dougherty, brothers Joe Dougherty and sisters Marilyn Willis and Virginia Vaught.
Pastor Bryan Trotter will conduct a service on Thursday, May 12, 2022 at 1:30 P.M. at Swartz Family Community Mortuary and Memorial Center, 300 South U.S. 31 (Morton Street) in Franklin, IN and will be live-streamed at www.swartzmortuary.com . Friends may call Thursday, May 12, 2022 from 11:30AM until service time at the mortuary. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in Greenwood, IN.
