Obituary

Charles Henry Sargent
December 23, 1944 – August 14, 2025

Charles Henry Sargent, affectionately known as "Charlie" or "Sarge," passed away peacefully on August 14, 2025, at the age of 80 in Greenwood, Indiana.  Born in Kitts, Kentucky, Charles was the beloved son of Frank and Ethel (Johnson) Sargent, who preceded him in death.

Charles spent his early years in a coal mining camp in Harlan County, Kentucky, where his father worked for V & C Coal Company.  He began high school at Hall High in Harlan before the family relocated to Indianapolis, IN in search of better opportunities.  Charles later returned to Kentucky to live with his grandparents in Middlesboro, graduating from Middlesboro High School in 1964.

On the same day as his graduation, Charles married Sheila Donaldson, and the couple settled in Indianapolis, where they raised their family and built a life together.  Charles dedicated over four decades of service to United Technologies Carrier (1965–2006), where he was known for his unwavering work ethic, leadership, and commitment to his colleagues.  He earned multiple Perfect Attendance awards and served as a Group Leader in manufacturing.  As a proud steward of the United Steelworkers of America, Charles advocated tirelessly for the rights and well-being of his fellow workers.

Beyond his professional life, Charles was a passionate garage sale and flea market enthusiast.  He had a keen eye for hidden treasures and took great joy in restoring and repurposing his finds.  His resourcefulness, humor, and love of a good bargain brought smiles to many and stories that will be fondly remembered.

Charles is survived by his children, Letha (Scott) Hines and Charles David (Amy) Sargent; their mother, Sheila Runnels; his brother, Frank Sargent Jr., and his four adored grandchildren: Lauren (Diego) Gutierrez, Samuel (Morgan) Hines, Aiden Sargent, and Andrew Sargent.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, August 24, 2025, at the United Steelworkers Union Hall, 218 South Addison Street, Indianapolis from 4:00 to 7:00 PM, family and friends are invited to gather to honor Charles's memory, share stories, and celebrate a life well lived.  A short service will take place at 5:30 PM.  Charles' final resting place will be at Gray's Knob Cemetery in Gray's Knob, Kentucky.
