Donald Raymond Sewell, 87, of Franklin, IN passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Friday, August 29, 2025 at Johnson Memorial Hospital in Franklin, IN.
He was born January 24, 1938 in Dabney, Kentucky to Rev. Lloyd and Madeline (Phelps) Sewell. He shared 64 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife Judith Ann (Whitaker) Sewell. They married on February 24, 1961 at the family residence in Dabney, Kentucky, she survives.
He proudly served our country as Specialist Third Class with Company B 241st Tank Battalion with the United States Army National Guard of Kentucky and later as Sergeant with the Army National Guard of Kentucky Company B 3D Battalion 123D Armor.
Donald retired as a machine repairman for the Indianapolis General Motors Bus and Truck Group in 1993 after over thirty years of service.
He had been a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Greenwood, IN. Donald enjoyed attending auctions, collecting antiques, fishing, boating, collecting cars and mostly enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He could fix anything and built homes on Lake Cumberland in Kentucky and on the family farm in Dabney, Kentucky.
Survivors include his wife Judith Ann (Whitaker) Sewell of Franklin, IN, his son William Donald "Donnie" Sewell (Denise) of Whiteland, IN, his daughter Cindy King (Bob) of Franklin, IN, five grandchildren Daniel Sewell (Maggie), Kristen DeVore (Dustin), Megan Richardson (Edward), Madeline Deitrich (Ross) and Jacob King, three great-grandchildren Lily Richardson, Dean DeVore and Dani DeVore, a brother James Sewell (Joyce) of Monrovia, IN, sisters Phyllis Whitis of Dabney, KY, Wanda Meece (Jack) of Dabney, KY, Merrlyn Crow (Bobby) of Dabney, KY and Doris Hensley of Maysville, KY and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Richard Sewell and Gerald Sewell, and his sisters Louise Gilliand and Betty Bingham.
Pastor Steve Meece will conduct a service on Thursday, September 4, 2025 at 1PM at Swartz Family Community Mortuary and Memorial Center, 300 South U.S. 31 (Morton Street) in Franklin, IN and will be live-streamed at www.swartzmortuary.com/obituary/donaldsewell. Friends may call Thursday, September 4, 2025 from 11AM until service time at the mortuary.
Burial will follow the service at Greenlawn Cemetery in Franklin, IN with military honors being conducted the Franklin American Legion Post 205 Honor Guard.
