Edelle J. Bray-Shockley

Edelle Bray-Shockley, 103 of Greenwood, IN died July 23, 2026. Born to Ruby Della (Watson) Johnson and Oscar Lee Johnson on June 9, 1923 in Franklin, IN, her mother died just months after her birth, leaving her to be lovingly raised by her aunt and uncle, Sarah Emma and George Nalley.

She married the love of her life Harlan C. Bray in 1942 and raised six children. After many years as a widow, she married August Shockley with whom she shared a love of faith, family, nature, and travel until his passing. Small in stature, but a powerhouse in her ability to extend love and kindness, her home was always a place of warm hospitality.

Since she was a child, the local library was a favorite place in town and books became her passion. However, the Bible was her lifelong favorite book to read and served to guide her life.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death her husband Harlan C. Bray, her second husband August Shockley, her siblings Birdie Cassidy (Andrew E), Clyde Johnson ( Alberta), Lloyd Johnson (Dovie), daughters Anne Pferrer (Mike), Mary Arthur (Ron), son Forrest Bray (Lorrie), step-son John Shockley, and granddaughter Angela Bornman (Clark). Left to cherish her memory are her children Lana Johns (Frank), Ellen Andersen (Roy), Tom Bray (Nancy), fourteen grandchildren, many great and several great-great-grandchildren, and numerous beloved friends.

The family would like to give a special thanks to Dr. Patricia Hallett and her caring staff, Johnson Memorial Hospital’s doctors and nursing staff, and her wonderful neighbors on Rylee Ct.  Services will be held at Swartz Family Community Mortuary and Memorial Center, 300 South U.S. 31 (Morton Street) in Franklin, Indiana on Friday, July 31st, 2026 at 1PM with visitation from 11 AM until service time at the mortuary and will be live-streamed at www.swartzmortuary.com/obituary/edellebrayshokley.
