Obituary

Dr. Erica Juergens Duggan, 71, of Indianapolis, Indiana, died peacefully surrounded by family and friends on March 18th, 2025, after a prolonged struggle with Alzheimer's.

Erica was born May 21st, 1953, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Dr. Richard Bowman Juergens and Joanne Juergens (neé Ahlfors). She spent her formative years in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and was a 1971 graduate of Snider High School. Erica received her undergraduate degree from Purdue University in 1975, achieving a double major in Spanish and Mathematics. Highlights of her time as a Boilermaker include her year-long study abroad program at The University of Madrid in Spain and her time in Alpha Gamma Delta sorority. She was accepted to the Indiana University School of Medicine, where she met the love of her life, Donald Duggan. Together, they graduated in 1981. Upon completing her family practice residency at St. Francis, she served the Beech Grove Family Physicians community as a fourth-generation Doctor. On her days off, she volunteered to teach English as an EL Teacher at ISOM elementary school, offered her services as a physician to Esperanza Ministries to support the local Hispanic community, and staffed the St. Francis family practice residents. Additionally, she was a clinical mentor for Indiana University medical students.

Erica and Don married in 1984 and had three children together. She built a home where everyone felt safe and cherished. Her greatest joy was caring for the people she loved. Erica loved her family deeply, and nothing made her happier than spending time with her siblings and cousins at Little Vineyard Lake in Brooklyn, Michigan. Her friends became like family, and she and her "Sister Chicks" and their spouses enjoyed their weekly Friday nights at Augustino's and their annual Labor Day trips to Petoskey, Michigan.

Don and Erica valued their faith and attended First Baptist Church of Greenwood and Coffeehouse Five Church in their later years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Richard and Joanne Juergens; her in-laws, Sam, Helen, and Mike Duggan; her nephew, Richard Juergens III; and several other beloved cousins and family members.

She is survived by her husband, Don of Indianapolis, IN, her children, Erin (Eric) Reamer of Greenwood, IN, Dr. Carter (Jordan) Duggan of Greenwood, IN, and Becca (Ryan) Maddigan of Indianapolis, IN; her grandchildren, Monroe, Mac, and Rooney; her siblings, Lindy (Dave Kehoe) Juergens of South Lyon, Michigan, Julie Shepherd of Columbia City, IN, Becky Juergens Valparaiso, IN, and Bo (Kim) Juergens of Ft. Wayne, IN, sister-in-law Denise Duggan of Terre Haute, IN; and many cousins, nieces and nephews, and friends.
