Gene Newton, 89, passed away on May 15, 2026, at his home in Greenwood, IN.

He was born on October 30, 1936, in Crawford County, Indiana to Ivan Edward and Zelma Claris (Highfill) Newton.  He was married to Norma Newkirk of Taswell, Indiana on April 10, 1960.  They were happily married for 66 years.

He worked for the United States Postal Service for 36 years.  He started on the Highway Post Office where they sorted mail on a large bus while moving from town to town.  He then moved on to sort mail on trains from Indianapolis to Saint Louis and Pittsburgh.  He retired in 1992 as Manager of Procurement Services.

Gene was a member of Bluff Creek Christian Church for over 50 years where he served as an elder and treasurer of the mission committee.

He enjoyed fishing, snow skiing in Michigan, playing cards and making memories with his family on Dale Hollow Lake, where they spent time boating and skiing together.

After retirement, Gene enjoyed wintering in Florida and working on his farm in Trafalgar raising produce to sell at the Greenwood and Bloomington farmers' markets.  He had many return customers that came back year after year for his tomatoes.  He was known as the tomato guy.

Survivors include his beloved wife, Norma; two daughters, Sherolyn (Randy) Stoughton of Martinsville, and Carolyn (Chris) Fite of Morgantown and his good friend Tom Bailey.

Also surviving are five grandchildren: Kathleen (Steven) Carpenter, Dakota (Shelby) Stoughton, Breanna MacLennan, Jared Neff, Justin (Elizabeth) Neff and his great-grandchildren: Daxel, Jade, Violet and Coen.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Nova Carrol Newton.

He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather.  He will be sorely missed by his family, but they know he is rejoicing in the presence of the Lord.

Pastor Jeremy Towne will conduct a service on Friday, May 22, 2026 at 3PM at Bluff Creek Christian Church, 6286 West State Road 144, Greenwood, IN with visitation will from 1PM until service time at the church.

Burial will be at Bluff Creek Cemetery in Greenwood, IN.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Bluff Creek Christian Church roof fund.
