Obituary

George Thomas Blankenship, 91, of Greenwood, IN passed away on Monday, February 24, 2025 surrounded by his family.

He was born February 15, 1934 in Marrowbone, Kentucky to Immer Virgil and Bertha Lee (Johnson) Blankenship.  He married Mary Jane (Mayer) Blankenship on August 3, 1957 at Holy Name Catholic Church in Beech Grove, IN, she survives.

George had been a welder for Egenolf Industrial Group in Indianapolis, IN for 30 years.

He was a charter member of Saints Francis and Clare Catholic Church in Greenwood, IN where he volunteered in the funeral meal group and was instrumental in the initial preparation and care of the lawn to the entry of the church.  He also had been a volunteer at Franciscan Health in Indianapolis, IN for ten years.  George also enjoyed fishing, gardening, and boating.

Survivors include his wife Mary Jane (Mayer) Blankenship of Greenwood, IN, a son Ron Blankenship and daughter-in-law Diane Blankenship of Bargersville, IN, a grandson Robert Blankenship of Greenwood, IN, a brother Ben Blankenship and his wife Patricia of Indianapolis, IN, sisters Anna V. Dockins of Indianapolis, IN, Peggy Pirtle of Wake Forest, North Carolina and Rita Harmon of Indianapolis, IN and many nieces and nephews.

His parents, brothers Charles Blankenship and Walter Blankenship, sisters Sue Boyd and Joann Thomason, preceded him in death.

Father Joe Moriority will conduct a Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, March 3, 2025 at 11AM at Saints Francis and Clare Catholic Church, 5901 Olive Branch Road, Greenwood, IN 46143.  Friends may call on Monday, March 3, 2025 from 9:30AM until service time at the church.  Inurnment will take place at Calvary Cemetery in Indianapolis, IN.

Swartz Family Community Mortuary and Memorial Center, 300 South U.S. 31 (Morton Street) in Franklin, IN is handling the arrangements.
