James "J." Homer Compton believed in doing things right the first time. He expected a firm handshake, a straight furrow, and the type of honesty that makes you stand a little taller.  He was a farmer, a mechanic, a veteran, and a man whose standards made everyone around him better—whether they were ready for it or not.

He was born on August 4, 1931 in rural Indiana, to James and Tot Compton, and spent nearly every day of his 93 years doing the quiet, necessary work that makes a life worth admiring.  He married his sweetheart, Martha Joan, and they created an admirable life for 72 years: choosing each other, over and over, in the small, ordinary moments that made their marriage extraordinary.

He answered his country's call in 1952, serving in the Armed Forces of the United States during the Korean War and stationed in Germany until his honorable discharge in 1954.  He continued to serve in the reserves until 1960, carrying that same quiet discipline into every season of his life that followed.

J. served his country, returning home to his bride, their church, and their farmland — raising four children: Steven (Debbie), Pamela (Mike), Beth Ann (Tom), and Tamara (David); 16 grandchildren; and 25 great grandchildren who now carry his fierce loyalty to family, his work ethic, and—if they're lucky—his stubborn streak.

He attended Union Christian Church Disciples of Christ.  He believed in God, hard work, and the value of keeping your word.  He loved duck season—especially Mallards, a well-tuned engine, and woodworking projects.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James S. and Tot Compton, and his brother, Bill Dick Compton.  His presence will be felt in every field he worked and every grandchild challenged to "do it better."

If you knew J., you knew this: he didn't ask for much—but he expected everything: integrity, effort, and a full follow-through.  He lived a life without shortcuts, and in doing so, he cultivated a legacy and a family who always shows up, works hard, and loves without pretense.

Don't memorialize him with niceties.  He wouldn't have wanted that. Instead, keep your word, fix what needs fixing, show up early, and tell the truth, especially when it costs you something.

Because once, a 19-year-old farm kid looked across a room and chose a girl named Martha Joan, and he kept choosing her for 72 years. Everything that came after—four children, 16 grandchildren, and great-grandchildren still being counted—is proof that ordinary love, practiced daily, builds an extraordinary legacy.

Chaplain Charlie Sawyer and Pastor Mark Parkey will conduct a service on Wednesday, July 30, 2025 at 10:00 AM at Swartz Family Community Mortuary and Memorial Center, 300 South U.S. 31 (Morton Street) in Franklin, IN and will be live-streamed at www.swartzmortuary.com/obituary/jamescompton.  Visitation will be on Tuesday, July 29, 2025 from 4PM until 7PM at the mortuary.  Burial with military honors being conducted the United States Army Honor Guard and Franklin American Legion Post 205 Honor Guard will follow the service at Greenlawn Cemetery in Franklin, IN.
