Obituary

Reverend James R. Devney, "Pastor Jim," a devoted husband, father, loving pastor, and faithful servant of the Lord, passed away on February 15, 2025, surrounded by loved ones.  He was 80 years young and passed to his eternal home, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, compassion, and a deep commitment to serving Jesus Christ.  He was born January 7, 1945, in Indianapolis, IN.  Pastor Jim married Carol L. Davis on August 1, 1963, at Garfield Christian Church in Indianapolis, IN.

As the senior pastor of Gracepoint Church in Whiteland, Indiana, since 2008, and the founding pastor of Emmanuel Church, which he established with his family in 1977, Pastor Jim dedicated his life to full-time pastoring and caring for people. His passion for God's Word and his heart for people made him a beloved leader in the community, and his influence extended far beyond his congregation, including mission fields around the world.

Pastor Jim's life was deeply impacted by Jesus Christ at the age of 24, and he dedicated his life to full-time service, attending Tennessee Temple University before returning to Indiana to begin his ministry at Emmanuel Church.  His life verse, Ephesians 4:32, "And be ye kind, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you," reflects the core of his character and the values he lived by.

As a loving husband and dad, Pastor Jim's family was at the center of his heart.  He cherished his wife, Carol, and their children, Jamie and Jennifer, who brought him joy and support throughout his life. He was a proud grandfather and great-grandfather, and he leaves behind a legacy that his family is proud to carry forward.

The survivors include his loving and devoted wife Carol, son Jamie Devney, daughter Jennifer Walters (John), grandchildren Stephanie Johnson (Cody), Morganne Devney, Jessica Edwards, Jordanne Counts (Clayton), Meaghan Haines (Conner), Payton Walters (Victor) and Eli Walters, 9 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by sisters Martine Thibo and Judy Wylie, and brother John Devney.

He was preceded in death by his mother Leona Inlow (Devney), father John Devney, sisters Ramona Gause, Glory McNulty, Donna Williams, Patty Ambs, and Carole Wilson, and Uncle Norman Yates.

Pastor Stan Glover will conduct a Celebration of Life service on Thursday, February 20, 2025, at 1:00PM EST at GracePoint Church, 330 West Whiteland Road, New Whiteland, IN 46184, and it will also be live-streamed on YouTube@GracePointNewWhiteland or at www.gpindy.net.  Burial will be at Mt.
