Obituary

James L. "Jim" McWhorter, 72, passed away Tuesday, July 22, 2025.

He was born December 20, 1952 to Elmer L. McWhorter and Helen O. (Jones) McWhorter.  Jim married Yan (Hong) McWhorter on August 6, 1997 in Albany, Kentucky, she survives.

He was a 1971 graduate of Shelbyville High School, received both his Bachelor of Science and Master's degrees from Indiana University Bloomington in education.

Jim was a veteran of the United States Army.

A retired educator, he had been a teacher for the Indianapolis Public School System for thirty years having taught English, special education, and night school.  He also taught at the Atterbury Job Corps.  He previously also taught at Perry Meridian Schools.

Jim enjoyed camping, fishing, boating, and the outdoors.  He also enjoyed flipping houses and old cars.  Jim loved Albany, Kentucky and the Hills of Kentucky.

Survivors include his wife Yan (Hong) McWhorter, his daughter Anna McWhorter, sisters Ruby McCoig, Reba Marshall, Rita Davis, Judy Bryant (Kerry), Jean McWhorter, Doris Shelton, and Donna Hiner (Kevin), brothers Eddie McWhorter (Lisa), and Larry McWhorter.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Mary McWhorter and JoAnne Riley, brothers Fred McWhorter and Samuel McWhorter.

Sister Joan Miller will conduct a service on Sunday, July 27, 2025 at 2:30 PM at Swartz Family Community Mortuary and Memorial Center, 300 South U.S. 31 (Morton Street) in Franklin, IN and will be live streamed at www.swartzmortuary.com/obituary/jamesmcwhorter.  Friends may call Sunday, July 27, 2025 from 11:30 AM until service time at the mortuary.

Burial will follow the service with full military honors by the United States Army Honor Guard and Franklin American Legion Post 205 Honor Guard at Forest Hill Cemetery in Shelbyville, IN.  In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to Saint Vincent De Paul Society of Shelbyville, 228 East Hendricks Street, Shelbyville, IN 46176.
