Obituary

James E. "Jim" Truelove died on January 6, 2025 at the Otterbein Seniorlife Community in Franklin, Indiana. He was born on May 22, 1935, in Earl Park, Indiana, to Herman F. and Flora Alexander Truelove.

Jim started school in Terre Haute, Indiana, and attended school in Florida, for almost two years during World War II.  He graduated from State High School in Terre Haute in 1953.  He attended Earlham College his freshman year and completed his bachelor's degree in 1957 and later also received a Master's degree from Indiana State University.  Jim also studied at Garrett Theological Seminary and received his degree from United Theological Seminary.

During his lifetime, Jim was a teacher and United Methodist pastor.  He taught English and Social Studies at several schools and also served as a principal.  Jim was member of the Indiana Conference of the United Methodist Church, serving congregations in Terre Haute, Rosedale, Goodland, Carbon, Boston, Richmond, Indianapolis, Greenwood, Corydon, Boonville, and in his retirement, he served in at Richmond Chester Heights, Fountain City, Middleboro and Whitewater.  While serving in the former South Indiana Conference, Jim also held a variety of district and conference positions.

Jim liked people, reading, traveling, yard work, baseball, and politics.  He was a liberal in both politics and theology.  Jim was a life-long Chicago Cubs fan, but his favorite player was Ted Williams.

Jim is survived by his wife of more than 44 years, Joan Burke Truelove, daughter, Amy Truelove (Zachary Schiffman) of Chicago, Illinois, son David Truelove (Jamie Fazzalore) of Yardley, PA and his stepsons, Tony Cain of Scottsburg, Indiana, and Randy Cain of Fresno, CA.  Jim is also survived by his grandchildren Aaron Schiffman of Chicago, Leah Schiffman of Brooklyn, NY, Alex Truelove of Denver, CO, Sam Truelove of Langhorne, PA and Rachel Truelove  of Brownsburg, IN and Sarah Cain, of Scottsburg, Indiana.

Chaplain Deb Baker will conduct a celebration of life memorial service on Saturday, May 17, 2025 at 11AM at the Wright Chapel at Otterbein Franklin Seniorlife Community, 1070 West Jefferson Street, Franklin, IN.  A reception will immediately follow at the fellowship hall at Otterbein Franklin Seniorlife Community.

A private family inurnment will take place at Elkorn Cemetery in Richmond, Indiana.

Swartz Family Community Mortuary and Memorial Center, 300 South U.S. 31 (Morton Street) in Franklin, IN is handling the arrangements.
