Jesse E. Shively PhD, 87, of Franklin, IN passed away Thursday, October 20, 2022 at Otterbein Franklin SeniorLife Community in Franklin, IN. He was born December 9, 1934 in Rossville, IN to Elmer D. Shively and Mary E. (Yoder) Shively.  He married Shirley J. (Fields) Shively on June 9, 1957 in Grass Creek, IN; she survives.
He was a 1953 graduate of Rossville High School, received his BS from Purdue University in 1957, his MS in 1963 from Purdue University and his PhD from Iowa State University in 1967.  He served in the United States Army from 1957 until 1959. He served as a Decatur County, IN 4-H youth agent and coordinated the overall 4-H program in the county. Dr. Shively was a graduate research assistant at Purdue University from 1961 until 1963, a graduate research assistant at Iowa State University from 1963 until 1965, and a research associate at Iowa State University from 1965 until 1967 while he finished his degree.
He had been a research nutritionist, project leader and research nutritionist for Pfizer Inc. Pfizer Central Research–Animal Health Research from 1967 until 1994 in Terre Haute, IN and from 1994 until 1996 in Groton, CT.
Dr. Shively was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Franklin, IN, the American Society of Animal Science, American Registry of Animal Scientist, Canadian Society of Animal Science and the Poultry Science Association. He was a volunteer for the Indiana Pork Producers Association where he served at the Indiana State Fair Pork Chop Tent for 20 years, Otterbein Franklin SeniorLife Community serving as president of the Men's Club and committee functions, volunteer for the Cancer Care Center of Johnson Memorial Hospital and where he served as an auditor of medical charts and transferring to the data base for fourteen years, St. Thomas Episcopal Church Free Medical Clinic in the drug prescription program and audit of medical charts for twelve years, American Cancer Society Relay of Life–Cancer Survivor and Relay Team Captain, Purdue University–Animal Science Department-Lifetime Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2008, Gift of Time Award for the American Cancer Society in 2011 and the State of Indiana–Golden Hoosier Award for volunteer activities–presented by Lt. Governor Sue Ellspermann in 2015.
Survivors include his wife Shirley J. (Fields) Shively of Franklin, IN, daughter Karen L. Spangler (Brad)) of Broken Arrow, OK, sons Kent A. Shively (Trisha) of Kokomo, IN and Kevin D. Shively of Terre Haute, IN, siblings Marie A. Baker of Rossville, IN, Doris M. Callaway (Glen) of North Manchester, IN, Leona Skiles (Meridith) of Rossville, IN and Kenneth D. Shively (Patty) of LaPorte, IN, seven grandchildren Logan A. Shively of Terre Haute, IN, Andrew M. Shively of Greentown, IN, Lauren E. Shively of Gypsum, CO, Hannah G. Spangler of Broken Arrow, OK, Luke J. Spangler of Kalamazoo, MI, Lilly Mathis of Indianapolis, IN, and Dallas D. Shively of Terre Haute,IN, and 9 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Clarence R. Shively, Glen Shively and Alvin P. Shively, and sisters Elsie C. Shuck and Dorothy Metzger.
Dr. Reverend Jenothy Irvine and Dr. Reverend Robert Coleman will conduct a service on Saturday, October 29, 2022 at Grace United Methodist Church, 1300 East Adams Street in Franklin, IN. The service was live-streamed and can be viewed at https://youtu.be/2CEElQjVzfo .  Friends may call Friday, October 28, 2022 from 6PM until 8PM at the Wright Chapel of Otterbein Franklin SeniorLife Community, 1070 West Jefferson Street in Franklin IN, and from 10:00 AM until service time at 11:30 at the church.  Burial with military honors will follow the service at Greenlawn Cemetery by the United States Army Honor Guard and Franklin American Legion Post 205 Honor Guard.
