John Frederick "Jack" Allman, 80, of Greenwood, IN, beloved husband, father, Popo, and mentor too many, entered eternal rest on Tuesday, September 22, 2026 after a courageous battle with ALS. His legacy of unwavering devotion to his family, faith, and profession lives on through his children, nine grandchildren, countless friends, and the many construction projects, both large and small, that bear the mark of his craftsmanship.
Born on July 31, 1946, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, to Jean Margaret (McAllister) Allman and Russell Paul Allman, John was the third of six children and the first-born twin. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Mark and Bill. He is survived by his brothers, Doug Allman (Elaine) of Traverse City, MI and James Allman (Diane) of Kalamazoo, MI; his sister, Marcia Kowalski (Gene) of Louden, TN; and many beloved nieces and nephews who mourn his passing.
John graduated from Hackett High School in Kalamazoo, where he excelled in athletics as a tight end on the state's championship football team, a guard on the varsity basketball team, and a participant in both cross-country and track. After graduation, he attended Sam's Technical Institute in Indianapolis, earning certification in tool and die making. Shortly thereafter, he was drafted into the United States Army and proudly served two years, including a year in Vietnam.
After returning to Indianapolis following his military service, John met and married Donna Shirley Glover on August 7, 1971 at Christ the King Catholic Church in Indianapolis, IN. Together; they shared 55 wonderful years of marriage and built a life centered on faith, family, and partnership. They raised three children and found their greatest joy in supporting their family through every stage of life. Donna survives him. Their son, Jeff predeceased him on November 12, 2022. John is survived by his son, Chad Allman (Julie) of Glen Ellyn, IL, and daughter, Jeana Thomas (Ian) of South Glastonbury, CT, his daughter-in-law Emilee Allman of Greenwood, IN along with his nine cherished grandchildren: Luke and Tatum (Jeff); Brooklyn, Audrey, Reece, and Myer (Chad); and Colin, Braden, and Derek (Jeana).
John worked as a carpenter millwright for Eli Lilly and Company for more than 30 years while also leading John F. Allman Construction for over 50 years. He loved his work and took great pride in mentoring many who chose careers in the construction industry. His dedication to quality craftsmanship and integrity earned the trust of multiple generations of families throughout central Indiana. When diagnosed with ALS, he faced the challenge the same way he approached every project in life: with determination and purpose, immediately turning his attention to preparing his family for the next chapter.
Nothing was more important to John than his family. For 35 years, he made Aruba the family's cherished Christmas destination, creating treasured memories that will continue to unite generations.
John lived his faith humbly through love, honesty, integrity, and service. A member of Southland Community Church, he quietly used his talents to serve others, including construction work that can still be seen in the church library. He was a faithful blood donor, generously sharing his O-positive blood whenever called upon, and throughout his life was equally generous with his time, resources, and willingness to help those in need.
Pastor Kerry Huffman will conduct a celebration of John's life on Saturday, September 26, 2026 at 10 AM at Southland Community Church, 5800 West Smith Valley Road in Greenwood; IN. Visitation will take place on Friday, September 25, 2026 from 3 PM until 6 PM at the church. John will be laid to rest at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Greenwood, IN following the service with full military honors being conducted by the United States Army Honor Guard and Franklin American Legion Post 205 Honor Guard.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Greenwood Village South and the dedicated team at the VA, whose exceptional care, kindness, and support meant so much to John and his family. They are also deeply thankful for the many friends whose visits, prayers, encouragement, and acts of kindness provided strength and comfort during these difficult months.
John often built things that would stand for generations. Yet his greatest work was the family he loved, the faith he lived, and the lives he touched. As we remember him, let us be reminded that Jesus was a carpenter. Follow Him, and one day follow John home.
