John Leroy Bennis, 73, of Greenwood, Indiana peacefully passed away on July 18, 2023 with family at his side. He was born August 3, 1949 to Mattie and Robert Bennis in Beech Grove, Indiana.

After graduating from Center Grove High School in 1967, John served at Camp Atterbury as a drill sergeant in the United States Army Reserves from 1968 - 1975 before starting his plumber's apprenticeship.  He married his wife Sandra on May 23, 1970 and the two built their life together in Greenwood, Indiana. They had two children and were involved in 4-H and the Johnson County community.  John eventually opened his own plumbing business, Sanjo Plumbing - named after his wife Sandra and himself as both helped the business thrive.  After retiring in 2005, John and Sandra temporarily moved to Redington Beach, Florida before returning home to be closer to family.

John loved many things in life; sharing the harvest from his garden with friends and family, country music, Ford trucks, Corvette convertibles, Harley Davidson motorcycles, a Miller Lite after a long day of work, hunting, fishing trips to Edmund Lake, boating, a good rare steak, and butter pecan ice cream (that was usually split with his grandchildren.) Most notably, John loved providing his family with experiences and spending time with his grandchildren, who called him Papaw. He was the man who gave it his all so his family could have it all.

John is survived by his wife Sandra (Dorrell) Bennis of Greenwood, IN, brother Allan Bennis (Dianna) of Greenwood, IN; his two children, Tracey Kramer (Greg) of Greenwood, IN and Tessa Key (Jason) of Trafalgar, IN and four grandchildren, Mattie, Clay, Maxwell, and Savannah (Jackson Lucas.)
