Phyllis J. (Underwood) Janis (Janiszewski), 96, of Franklin, IN and formerly of Lisle, IL passed away Sunday January 15, 2023 at the Indiana Masonic Home at Compass Park in Franklin, IN. She was born February 8, 1926 in Chicago, IL to Phillip H. Underwood and Caroline (Filipek) Underwood.
She married Johnny (Fabian) Janiszewski on November 27, 1948 and celebrated 50 years of marriage. He preceded her in death on December 28, 1998.
She resided in Lisle, IL for almost 70 years and was active in the Lisle community helping start a library, high school, parks and more. She worshiped regularly at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church. She loved gardening and was an avid fan of all the Chicago professional sports teams. She liked walking the trails in the Morton Arboretum with her friend Joe Accurso (deceased).
Survivors include her son Tim Janis and daughter-in-law Kathy Janis of Franklin, IN, grandchildren Mark Janis (Julie) of Nashville, IN, Paul Janis (Rita) of Franklin, IN, Melissa Janis of Brooklyn, NY. Her daughter-in-law Vicki Janis Deken of Sun Lakes, AZ and granddaughter Jennifer Janis of Akron, OH. Step-grandchildren Kathy Deam of Sidney, OH, and Diana Macchi of Vergiate, Italy, Siblings Sheila Haumesser of Westmont, IL, and Paula Franta (Rudy) of Walnut, CA, sixteen great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son Michael Janis, daughter-in-law Diane (Dee) Janis, brothers Phillip Underwood and Donald Underwood.
Father Tim DeCrane will conduct a Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, January 30, 2023 at 11AM at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, 114 Lancelot Drive in Franklin, IN where friends may call from 10:30 AM until service time at the church.
Inurnment will take place at Assumption Cemetery, 15510 Winfield Road in Wheaton, IL.
Swartz Family Community Mortuary and Memorial Center, 300 South U.S. 31 (Morton Street) in Franklin, IN is handling the arrangements.
