Richard A.
Bishop
May 21, 1934 — May 17, 2025
Indianapolis
Richard Allen Bishop, 90, of Indianapolis, IN passed away Saturday, May 17, 2025 at Community Hospital South in Indianapolis, IN following a brief illness.
He was born to Lewis Bishop and Helen (Lamb) Bishop on May 21, 1934 in Indianapolis, IN, the youngest of three sons.
Richard grew up in Southport, IN and raised by his mother after losing his Dad in the line of duty with the Indianapolis Fire Department in 1939.
After high school, Richard joined the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He spent a few years overseas before Wright Patterson Air Force Base.
Richard would tell anyone the highlight of his military career was meeting his future wife Dorothy, the love of his life. Dorothy was working as a civilian nurse in the officer's ward while Richard was serving as a medic at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. They were married on December 14, 1954 in Southport, IN and enjoyed nearly 70 years together until Dorothy was called home on September 25, 2022.
During his working years, Richard worked as a flight instructor at the Franklin Flying Field, served as a Johnson County Reserve Deputy with the Johnson County Sheriffs Department, a real estate broker and owned Bishop Oil Company. He decided to return work after a brief retirement and worked at Ray Skillman Auto Group in Greenwood.
Richard was a friendly and independent man who showed courage and grace as he navigated life without his Dorothy thru the joys and sorrows that we all have. He never knew or met a stranger and was definitely blessed with the gift of gab.
Survivors include his daughters Robyn Platt of Greenwood and Lori Mathews (Bill) of Greenwood, IN, five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, his great friends Jose and Dulce Garcia of Indianapolis, IN and his fur baby Ginger.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, a son Mark Bishop on July 22, 2014, a son-in-law Rusty Platt on March 15, 2015 and brothers Harry Bishop and Robert Bishop.
