Obituary

Stephen Michael Chaplin, age 78 of Indianapolis, IN, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 3, 2026 at the Altenheim Health and Living Community in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Steve was born on June 25, 1947 in Indianapolis, IN, and lived a life marked by service, kindness, humor, and deep love for others. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Robert "Bob" Chaplin and Catherine "Kate" (Sherman) Chaplin, who surely welcomed him home with open arms.

A proud Vietnam veteran, Steve served honorably in the United States Air Force, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant (SSgt). His dedication to duty and country remained a source of quiet pride throughout his life. Following his military service, Steve devoted 30 years to working for the City of Indianapolis Transportation Department, where he built lasting friendships before retiring.

Steve had an exceptionally big heart, especially when it came to children. He loved them deeply and took great joy in being part of their lives. Many were blessed to call him Godfather, a role he embraced with love, laughter, and unwavering support. Steve was known for his generosity, sense of humor, and genuine warmth—the kind of person who made others feel seen, welcomed, and cared for.

A devout Catholic throughout his life, Steve's faith guided him in both quiet moments and everyday actions. He also had a special love for animals, especially his cherished pets, Dusty and Tiger, who brought him comfort and companionship.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Monsignor Downey Council #3660 in Indianapolis, IN.

Steve leaves behind many family members and friends who loved him dearly and will carry his memory in their hearts. His laughter, kindness, and loving spirit will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
