Obituary

William R. "Bill" Dougherty, 80, of Needham, IN and lifelong Johnson County resident passed away Sunday, February 16, 2025 at Ashford Place Health Campus in Shelbyville, IN.

He was born February 22, 1944 in Greenwood, Indiana to John E. Dougherty and Josephine (Wright) Dougherty.

Bill was a 1962 graduate of Whiteland High School.

He farmed for many years and later owned and operated Dougherty Excavation for over 40 years.

Bill enjoyed woodworking and gardening.  He was very creative in construction and could design and build anything.  Bill also enjoyed meeting every month his high school classmates.

Survivors include his sons Tim Dougherty (Lynda) of Greenfield, IN and John Dougherty (Lana) of Needham, IN, five grandchildren Amberlee Dougherty, Drew Dougherty (Kendall), A.J. Dougherty, Jake Dougherty and Kara Dougherty, siblings Donna Marie Copeland Laker of Greenwood, IN, Jim Dougherty of Gwynville, IN, Steve Dougherty (Elaine) of Greenwood, IN, Mary Ellen "Cricket" Smith (Bob) of Greenwood, IN, a sister-n-law Mary Donna (Lawson) Dougherty of Shelbyville, IN and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife Tracy Ann Dougherty on March 22, 2021, his parents John E. Dougherty and Josephine (Wright) Dougherty, siblings Marilyn Willis and her husband Paul, Joe Dougherty and his wife Amaryllis, Charles Burton Dougherty, Virginia Vaught and her husband Don, Phil Dougherty and his wife Loretta, Don Dougherty, a brother-in-law Tony Laker.

Pastor Seth Amerine will conduct a service on Friday, February 21, 2025 at 10:30 AM at Swartz Family Community Mortuary and Memorial Center, 300 South U.S. 31 (Morton Street) in Franklin, IN and will be live-streamed at www.swartzmortuary.com/obituary/williamdougherty   Friends may call Thursday, February 20, 2025 from 4PM until 8PM at the mortuary.  Burial will follow the service at Rocklane Cemetery in Greenwood, IN.
