William Henry Whitehurst Jr., 91, of Franklin, IN passed away Saturday, July 27, 2024 at Johnson Memorial Hospital in Franklin, IN.
He was born December 17, 1932 in Norfolk, VA to William Henry Whitehurst Sr. and Viola (Moore) Whitehurst. He married Lois (Umberger) Whitehurst on December 19, 1954 in Wytheville, VA; she preceded him in death on May 26, 2018. He had one sister Mary Allwyn Peris who preceded him in death.
Bill/Billy as he was known by his family and friends was an active Ordained
Minister, Interim Minister and Supply minister of several churches in the Virginia Region of The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) for as many as 50 years including his last two full-time ministries at Woodstock/Edinburg Christian Churches and Pleasant Grove Christian Church (Martinsville, VA). Bill was the first of three generations of Ministry in his family as his son and granddaughter also served/serves in ministry.
Bill was also a graduate of Lynchburg College (now University of Lynchburg) in Lynchburg, VA. LC was very important to Bill and his family as four generations of his family were/are also graduates. His mother, wife, sister and two sons were/are graduates as well. After graduating from LC he married his wife on December 19, 1954 and then headed to Kentucky to finish his education for ministry at The College of the Bible (now Lexington Theological Seminary) earning a Bachelor of Divinity.
Survivors include his two sons Stephen Tod Whitehurst (Angela) of Salem, VA, William Allen Whitehurst (Jill) of Franklin, IN and six grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.
